Where can I find information on other research IT services than those provided by the higher education community?

We will gladly help you with choosing and accessing the services best fit for your research needs. We will also serve as a contact channel for CSC (Center for Science) if needed. Research planning and working environments

  • Funet Filesender – filesender.funet.fi
    Funet Filesender is an easy-to-use, browser-based file sharing service specialized in transferring and sharing large files. The service isn’t intended for long-term storage since the files are deleted after a pretermined period of time. To access Funet Filesender, use Haka login.
  • Open Science and Research – openscience.fi
    Open Science and Research is an initiative supported by The Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland. The initiative aims to promote research availability of information and open science practices. The site contains information about the initiative and open science customs, and is open for everyone to use.

Gathering and producing data

  • AVAA – avaa.tdata.fi
    AVAA is an open data publishing platform for research data. Currently available applications on the platform allow users to e.g. study the spreading of pollution clouds.
  • Aila Data Service – services.fsd.uta.fi
    The Aila Data Service provides access to data archived at the Finnish Social Science Data Archive. The data is available free of charge for registered users, according to access conditions set for each dataset.
  • B2FIND – eudat.eu/services/b2find
    B2FIND is a service for finding research materials using descriptive data, i.e. metadata.
  • B2SHARE – b2share.eudat.eu
    B2SHARE is a platform for browsing and publishing research data. The data uploaded to B2SHARE is open for everyone to utilize and browse. You’ll need to register to the service in order to upload data to B2SHARE.
  • Etsin – etsin.avointiede.fi
    Etsin is a research data finder that contains descriptive information – that is, metadata – on research datasets. The metadata stored in Etsin includes information on the author, subject, format and licensing of the dataset. The metadata of research data saved to Finnish Social Science Data Archive is automatically indexed to Etsin.
  • The Language Bank of Finland – kielipankki.fi
    The Language Bank of Finland is a service for researchers using language resources. Many corpora are publicly accessible, some require logging in. The rights to use restricted resources can be applied for electronically. Using the Language Bank is free for researchers and students.
  • PaiTuli – csc.fi/paituli
    Paituli is spatial data download service. Paituli’s primary users are students and personnel of Finnish universities and polytechnics, but most of the datasets are open to anyone. You can access PaiTuli with Haka login.
  • Vipunen – Education Statistics Finland – vipunen.fi
    Vipunen is a statistics service based on open source code. The statistics are based on data and registers collected by the Statistics Finland, the Ministry of Culture and Education and the Finnish National Board of Education.

Analysing and storing data

  • Chipster – chipster.csc.fi
    Chipster is an open source software for analyzing high-throughput data such as NGS and microarrays. Chipster is especially useful for medical and biomed students as it offers for more than 300 analysis tools and a large collection of reference genomes. Using Chipster is free of charge for Finnish universities and polytechnic universities. If you wish to use Chipster running on CSC’s server you’ll need to register to the service.

    CSC supports researchers and academic institutions by providing a comprehensive set of internationally competitive computing services. To utilize CSC’s computing services you need to apply for the rights on the website linked above.

  • Elmer – csc.fi/Elmer
    Elmer is an open source simulation software for solving partial differential equations, and it’s especially well suited for modeling multi-physical phenomena.
  • IDA – openscience.fi/ida
    IDA is a safe and easy-to-use storage for research datasets and metadata. IDA can be used with multiple interfaces. The data uploaded to the services is saved into projects and the users can be affiliated with multiple separate projects. Data uploaded to IDA is also checked for malware and backed up. You can log into IDA with your organizational account and after that apply for storage space.
  • Pouta – pb.csc.fi
    Pouta Cloud Service allows researchers to execute various types of computing, many of which weren’t possible before. The service utilizes cloud technology and Taito super cluster’s capacity. To use Pouta you’ll need to register as CSC’s customer (with Haka login) and add Pouta to your services at Scientist’s User Interface.Even though the server is situated in a CSC server room, it can be given a .uta.fi address.

    Scientist’s User Interface is CSC’s portal for easily adding tools for your use and accessing them. You can sign in to the service with via Haka login.
